For nine days in August, the biggest game in the world belonged to somebody else. Clips of Grand Theft Auto VI showed up on X in the wrong order, at the wrong resolution, stamped with a memecoin watermark. Then, at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday 27 August 2026, Rockstar Games took it back: 26 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, on Netflix.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is the longest footage Rockstar has released in more than a decade, and every frame was captured in-game on a base PlayStation 5 — not a dev rig, not a pre-rendered cinematic. Within the hour the comparison everyone was making had stopped being “GTA 6 versus GTA 5” and become “the Extended Look versus the leaks”. The leaks lost badly.
Below: every clip that spread from the premiere, the official screenshots, what the footage confirms, and why the “playable build” on torrent sites is malware.
What is An Extended Look and where can you watch it?
A gameplay showcase, not a cinematic trailer. It premiered as a Netflix exclusive at 3 p.m. ET on 27 August 2026, worldwide, subtitled in thirteen languages, then went free six hours later on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site. Without Netflix you missed a six-hour head start, nothing more.
The runtime is what to sit with. Rockstar’s GTA 5 gameplay trailer ran 4:51; the Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay trailers ran 10:30. This one runs 26 minutes 49 seconds — five times the GTA 5 reveal.

A note on the runtime, because the numbers disagree
Netflix’s listing and most outlets say 26 minutes; a few headlines rounded to 27. We use 26, because that is what Netflix published and Rockstar confirmed. The viral “three episodes, 1 hour 5 minutes” claim was false.
Why the Netflix footage looks nothing like the Cyberleek clips
This comparison dominated the first hour of reaction, and it is worth being precise about why the gap is so wide.
The clips that leaked from 18 August carried metadata pointing to 2024 or earlier builds. They were then screen-captured, re-encoded, watermarked and pushed through X’s compression — four generations of quality loss before anyone pressed play, several sub-1080p with crushed shadows.

The Extended Look is the other end of that chain: a direct in-game capture on retail PS5 hardware. Ray-traced reflections that were mushy or missing in the leaks are sharp enough here that people paused on car windows to count what was reflected. None of this makes the leaks fake. It makes them what leaks always are: an old build, badly copied.

The bank job, the getaway and the return of the six-star wanted level
If you watch one stretch, make it the robbery — it is where the systems talk loudest.
Money drives the campaign. You raise specific amounts to push the story forward, which turns robbery from side content into the spine of the game. With it comes a choice: blow a safe and get out fast at the cost of what is inside, or work the combination, keep the goods intact, and stay in the building while police close in.
Jason and Lucia can be split up. Some jobs are offered with the catch that only one can take it. Inside a job you switch between them — one on the vault, one on the door — and during the escape you swap between whoever drives and whoever shoots. Raul Bautista, the veteran robber from the second trailer, is back.

The wanted meter goes to six stars again, undoing GTA 5’s five-star cap; six triggers an all-out manhunt. Under the stars sit icons showing exactly what the police know — your face, your clothing, your vehicle. Change any and you change your odds, which is why you can stash clothes and weapons in a car. Escaping does not clear the area either: where you were seen stays an active search zone. In the getaway shown, the dumped car is torched with a Molotov.
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are a couple before they are a crew
The most talked-about moment was not a shootout. It was Lucia asking Jason which dress she should wear, Jason picking the wrong one, and Lucia saying “I’ll just be a few seconds” before reappearing in something else entirely. Journalists watching flagged it instantly as the tell for what this game is about.

Rockstar leans in: an optional romance layer, beats like holding hands, and an ecosystem of street dealers, veteran robbers and semi-retired drug runners around them. Lucia’s ankle monitor stays central.
Combat has been rebuilt around them: a dodge in hand-to-hand fighting, slow-motion carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2, and a sequence where Lucia fights out of an ambush and ends it with a stiletto heel to her attacker’s face. Pet a dog instead of provoking it and an angel icon appears, hinting at a reputation layer underneath.
What you can do when you are not robbing anyone
A large share of the 26 minutes is spent away from missions, and that is where the map argument gets made. On screen: mini golf, kayaking, scuba diving, swimming, jet skiing, base jumping and parachuting, car meets, street and dirt-bike racing, basketball, a gun range, fan-boat rides, pool, zoo visits with animals you can study, and gym sessions that need a membership. There is a scrollable in-game social feed too, so you can doomscroll inside a game about not being able to stop.

Scale, per the showcase and follow-up previews: the map is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, Vice City about twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos, and the main story near 80 hours. Leonida carries the rest — the Keys, the swamps of Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

The detail people actually froze the video on
Reaction clustered not around explosions but around small things that are expensive to render and usually faked. Reflections: a 4K clip of moving glass spread on the argument that studios spend years designing mirrors cracked or dirty to dodge that cost. Density: beaches of NPCs doing separate things at once, a club that keeps performing while you walk through it, shelves of individually modelled bottles, NPCs who physically resist being pulled from a car. Consequence: drop the engine meter to half and the car smokes; stop a stolen car and its tracker flashes before police arrive. None of it is new alone. All of it at once, on a base PS5, is the claim.

Were streamers allowed to broadcast a Netflix exclusive? Yes — with one condition
For a week nobody knew. Netflix support was telling creators that streaming a Netflix title breaches the terms of service, while Rockstar was building a moment that only works if it gets reposted everywhere. Rockstar settled it publicly on 27 August, and the wording matters:
“Quick clarification: you are free to livestream An Extended Look from 3 p.m. ET on August 27 providing you adhere to platform-specific guidance and you do not simply restream or repost the unedited video in full without context or commentary.”
In plain terms: react to it, break it down, watch it live with your chat on Twitch, Kick or YouTube — but do not rebroadcast the raw 26 minutes with nothing added. Nobody had to wait for the free YouTube drop, so the first takes went live inside the Netflix window.
It worked to the point of breaking things. Twitch streams carried a combined 881,000 viewers ten minutes out, peaked near 1.8 million concurrent viewers, and then Twitch buckled — broken streams, failing chat, pages that would not load. Netflix held; Twitch did not.
The Cyberleek leak, the memecoin and the 113 GB “build” that is pure malware
From 18 August an account operating as Cyberleek published eight or more genuine GTA 6 clips, framed as a protest against Rockstar’s digital-first launch plans. Rockstar answered with takedowns and, on 26 August, a raw statement calling the leak “heartbreaking for our team”.
The protest framing did not survive contact with the blockchain. The footage carried the watermark of a Solana memecoin, $CYBERLEEK, over text reading “higher market cap = more leeks”. The token launched on 15 August — three days before any footage appeared — and clips dropped on market-cap milestones. It peaked near $25 million on 23 August, and on-chain records show the contract owner dumping the creator-fee allocation for roughly $270,000 hours before Rockstar’s reveal. Take-Two has subpoenaed X, Microsoft and Discord.
Do not download the “playable build”. It is a virus.
A 113.90 GB torrent named grand.theft.auto.vi.gta.6.cyberleek.build.v1.287.0.lucia.repack.iso spread across piracy sites. Reverse-engineering found it is 99.99% padded zeroes around an executable of roughly 50 KB, whose installer excluded the entire C: drive from Windows Defender and killed other security software before running its next stage.
A parallel campaign was cleaner and therefore worse. Sites impersonating Rockstar’s promotion — gta6demo[.]asia, rockstar-gta-6[.]com — served a 1.1 MB gta6_installer.exe behind a “Play Now” button. It is the Vidar infostealer: saved credentials across 19 browsers, plus session cookies, which walk straight past two-factor authentication.
To be blunt: there is no public GTA 6 beta, no PC version and no safe playable build in circulation. Every download claiming otherwise is bait.

From Leonida to the Bosphorus: the real version of that skyline drive
Half of what makes the Extended Look land is not the shooting. It is the boat wake at sunset, the night skyline from the water, a city worth driving through. Vice City is a fictional Miami — but the appetite is real, and Istanbul is good at those three things.
The closest thing to that night-water sequence is a private Bosphorus cruise and night tour, where the skyline arrives from the water rather than through a windscreen; for the open-water stretch, our private yacht and boat charters run the strait on your own schedule. On land, the free-roam driving equivalent is a private daily tour of Istanbul, while our executive private transport service covers airport-to-meeting logistics if this is a work trip.
So what should you take from the Extended Look?
One: the game is real and it is close. Twenty-six minutes of continuous in-game footage on retail hardware, three months out, is not a studio hiding a problem. Rockstar’s own statement said the game was “nearly there”.
Two: the leaks are now the worst way to see it — old builds, compressed to death, when the official 26 minutes are free on YouTube.
Three: the scam window stays open until 19 November. No beta, no PC build, no demo. If a site offers you one, it wants your session cookies.
