Republic Day in Istanbul falls on Thursday, 29 October 2026. It is the one night of the year when the whole city turns towards the Bosphorus. Turkey's most important national holiday marks the proclamation of the Republic on 29 October 1923, and 2026 is its 103rd anniversary. Istanbul celebrates with a morning ceremony in Fatih, free concerts in the squares and an evening light and fireworks show over the water. For visitors that means two things: a spectacular evening, and some of the most unpredictable traffic of the autumn. This guide covers both. It explains when and where to watch, which roads close, what shuts for the day, and how to plan airport and hotel transfers around the crowds.
The short version:
The holiday officially starts at 13:00 on Wednesday 28 October and runs for 35 hours.
In recent years the Bosphorus show has started at some point between roughly 19:30 and 21:00. The official 2026 time is usually published only a few days before.
Vatan Caddesi (Adnan Menderes Bulvarı) in Fatih has closed from 05:45 on the morning of 29 October for the official ceremony.
Most local guides list the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar as closed on 29 October.
If you fly on 28 or 29 October, pre-book your transfer and build in a time buffer.
When is Republic Day 2026 in Istanbul?
Republic Day 2026 is Thursday, 29 October. The official holiday begins at 13:00 on Wednesday, 28 October, which is a half day for public offices. Under Law No. 2429 of 1981 it is a national holiday, so government offices, banks and schools close. Hotels, restaurants, cafés and malls carry on as normal, and ATMs work.
The calendar matters more than it looks. A Wednesday-afternoon start followed by a Thursday holiday means many residents will be travelling at the same time, some heading out of the city and others heading into the centre for the celebrations. Based on how previous holidays have played out, we expect the heaviest road traffic from early afternoon on Wednesday the 28th, and along the Bosphorus shoreline on the evening of Thursday the 29th.
Where and when is the Bosphorus fireworks show?
The main Republic Day show in Istanbul takes place over the Bosphorus. In recent years it has centred on the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge (the first Bosphorus Bridge, between Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi) and started after dark, usually between 19:30 and 21:00. The exact launch point and time change from year to year, which is why older blog posts and forum threads give conflicting answers:
2013 (90th anniversary): a light show from 19:30 across the stretch between the bridge and the Maiden's Tower, then the main fireworks from Ortaköy Square at 19:45. Officials said more than 48,000 fireworks were fired from 16 separate points.
2019: the main display was staged off Üsküdar, in front of the Maiden's Tower, and began around 21:00.
2023 (centenary): a naval parade of 100 ships on the Bosphorus at 17:00, followed by a drone, light and fireworks show at the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge from 19:50 to 20:15.
At the time of writing (19 October 2026), the evening programme for this year had not been published. It normally appears a few days before the 29th, so check again on the morning of the day. The practical rule is to be in position by 19:00 and plan to stay until at least 21:30.
Free concerts before the fireworks
Istanbul's municipalities fill the early evening with free open-air concerts. In 2025 the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's main "Cumhuriyet Senfonisi" concert began at 19:30 in Beşiktaş Square, a short walk from the Bosphorus shore. In 2024 the main city concert was held at the Yenikapı event area instead. The venues change every year, so treat this as a pattern rather than a promise. Beşiktaş is the easiest place to combine a concert with a fireworks view.

Best places to watch the Republic Day fireworks in Istanbul
The best viewpoints have a clear line of sight to the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge and the open water south of it. Because the launch point moves, a spot with a wide view down the strait is safer than one tucked right under the bridge.
European shore
Ortaköy Square: the closest classic viewpoint, with the mosque and the bridge in one frame. It is also the most crowded, so arrive by 18:00 if you want space at the railing.
Beşiktaş and the Dolmabahçe waterfront: good if you want to combine the evening with a square concert.
Kabataş and Fındıklı: a wider promenade with a longer view up the strait. It works whether the show is staged at the bridge or further south.
Asian shore
Üsküdar waterfront and Salacak: look across to the Maiden's Tower. These were front-row seats in years when the display was staged off Üsküdar.
Kuzguncuk and Beylerbeyi: right beside the bridge's Asian end and usually calmer than Ortaköy.
Shore or water: which is better?
The shore is free and full of atmosphere, but after 19:00 it is standing room only. Travel planners report that Bosphorus-view restaurants book out three to four weeks ahead for the night. A boat costs more, but it guarantees a seat, an unobstructed view of both shores and an easy exit without fighting the crowd.
The authorities set a safety perimeter on the water around the show, so no vessel sits directly under the fireworks. A captain who knows the strait will still position you with a clear line of sight. Our private Bosphorus yacht charters start from €350 for the two-hour minimum. For a fireworks evening, a three-hour slot starting around 18:00 covers the sunset, the blue hour and the show itself.
Which roads close in Istanbul on 29 October?
The biggest planned closure is in Fatih. For the official ceremony and parade, Adnan Menderes Bulvarı (still known to everyone as Vatan Caddesi) closes in both directions from 05:45 until the programme ends, along with every street that joins it. The Istanbul Governorship's 2025 list included the D-100 entries from both directions and the junctions at Edirnekapı, 10. Yıl Caddesi, Ordu Caddesi and Atatürk Bulvarı, among others. Drivers were sent instead along Turgut Özal Millet Caddesi, Fevzipaşa Caddesi, Atatürk Bulvarı, the D-100 and the O-3 Hal Yolu. A full rehearsal with the same closures takes place on a Sunday beforehand (19 October in 2025).
Why it matters to visitors: Vatan Caddesi is one of the main arteries into the historic peninsula. If your hotel is in Sultanahmet, Beyazıt, Fatih or Aksaray, or you have a morning pickup there, both the route and the timing will change. The 2026 list had not been published at the time of writing; it is normally announced a few days in advance.
The second pinch point is unofficial: the Bosphorus shoreline in the evening. The coastal roads through Beşiktaş, Ortaköy and Üsküdar fill with people heading to the water. In past years some drivers have even stopped on the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge to watch the show. Expect slow traffic near the squares and very few free taxis in the hour after the fireworks, when thousands of people try to leave at once.
How a pre-booked private driver solves holiday traffic
The most reliable fix is to stop navigating yourself. A pre-booked driver who knows the day's closures can drop you as close to your viewpoint as the traffic police allow, wait away from the crowd, and collect you on a quieter side street once the show is over. You don't have to hunt for a taxi among thousands of people.
With our private car hire with driver, you book a Mercedes-Benz Vito, S-Class or Sprinter by the hour, for anywhere from 4 to 12 hours (from €99 for four hours at the time of writing). Our English- and Arabic-speaking drivers stay in touch over WhatsApp. On the evening of the 29th, a five- or six-hour booking from late afternoon covers dinner, a concert, the fireworks and the drive back to your hotel.
For daytime sightseeing on the 28th or 30th, the Historical Istanbul tour takes you round the old city's monuments without you needing to know which avenue is closed. Couples can turn the holiday evening into something special with the Romantic Istanbul tour.
Flying in or out around Republic Day? Plan your airport transfer
If you land or depart between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday night, book your airport transfer in advance and leave earlier than you normally would. We suggest adding about an hour to your usual departure time for evening flights on the 29th. With a pre-booked Istanbul Airport transfer, your driver tracks your flight and includes up to 90 minutes of free waiting after landing. A delayed arrival into a holiday evening won't leave you stuck in a taxi queue. On departure day, your driver will avoid Fatih in the morning and the Bosphorus shoreline in the evening. Book at least one day ahead. On holiday dates, earlier is better, because availability gets tight.
What is open and closed in Istanbul on 29 October?
Closed: government offices, banks and schools. ATMs keep working.
Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar: most current local guides list both as closed on 29 October. One guide says some shops open anyway, but don't count on it. Shop on the morning of the 28th or on Friday the 30th.
Open: hotels, restaurants, cafés, malls and most shops outside the historic bazaars.
Public transport: runs normally. In 2025 the city made all Istanbulkart-integrated public transport free on 29 October. In 2024 the free travel applied only to personalised Istanbulkart holders, which most visitors are not. The 2026 decision had not been announced at the time of writing.
A simple plan for 28 to 29 October
Wednesday 28, morning: visit the bazaars while they are open. Get back to your hotel, or meet your driver, by early afternoon, before the holiday traffic builds.
Thursday 29, morning: stay away from Fatih unless you want to see the ceremony. Spend the day on the Asian side or have a long Bosphorus-side lunch.
Thursday 29, evening: board your boat around 18:00, or be dropped near your viewpoint and in position by 19:00. After the show, walk to the pickup point you agreed with your driver rather than looking for a taxi.
Friday 30: the bazaars reopen and roads are calmer, which makes it a good day to fly out.
