This is the follow-up to our Republic Day guide. When we published it on 19 October, several key details for 29 October 2026 in Istanbul had not yet been announced. They are official now. The Istanbul Governorship has published the road closures. A presidential decree in the Official Gazette makes three rail lines free for the day, including the Istanbul Airport metro. The city has also confirmed its main concert. This page covers only what is new and confirmed as of 27 October 2026. For the background (where to watch, what's open, the bazaars), read our full Republic Day guide.

What has changed since our first guide?

  • Road closures: confirmed. Vatan Caddesi and every street that joins it close from 05:45 on Thursday 29 October.

  • Free transport: confirmed, but narrower than in 2025. Only three Istanbul rail lines are free: Marmaray, the Sirkeci–Kazlıçeşme line and the Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı metro.

  • City concert: confirmed. Yenikapı, 18:00, free entry.

  • Fireworks time: still not announced.

  • New: the city's disaster coordination centre (AKOM) is forecasting heavy rain on the 29th.

28–29 October hour by hour

  • Wed 28, 13:00: the official holiday begins and runs for 35 hours. Banks and government offices close for the afternoon. Expect traffic leaving the city from early afternoon.

  • Thu 29, 05:45: Vatan Caddesi (Adnan Menderes Bulvarı) closes in both directions until the official ceremony ends.

  • Thu 29, all day: Marmaray, Sirkeci–Kazlıçeşme and the airport metro are free.

  • Thu 29, 18:00: free city concert at the Yenikapı event area.

  • Thu 29, evening: the Bosphorus shoreline is at its busiest. The fireworks time has not been announced. In past years the show has started between 19:30 and 21:00.

  • Fri 30: a normal working day, with calmer roads. A good day to fly out.

Which roads close in Istanbul on 29 October 2026?

Adnan Menderes Bulvarı, which everyone still calls Vatan Caddesi, closes in both directions from 05:45 on Thursday 29 October until the official ceremony and parade are over. According to the Istanbul Governorship's notice, the closure takes full effect at 06:00. Every street leading onto the boulevard is shut as well:

  • the D-100 entries from both the north and south sides;

  • 10. Yıl Caddesi, Edirnekapı, and Oğuzhan, Sofular, Halıcılar, Akdeniz and Akşemsettin streets;

  • Ordu Caddesi and Atatürk Bulvarı coming from Aksaray;

  • Keçeci Meydan Sokak and the Hal Yolu from the south;

  • Tatlıpınar, Kaleboyu and Sulukule streets.

The official detours are Turgut Özal Millet Caddesi, Fevzipaşa Caddesi, Atatürk Bulvarı, the D-100 and the O-3 Hal Yolu. The Governorship says 111 traffic officers will be working at 58 points around the city. The full rehearsal used the same closures. It took place on Saturday 24 October, a day earlier than usual, because a national civil-service exam was held on the Sunday.

What it means if you're staying in the old city

Sultanahmet itself is not on the closure list. The closures cover the Fatih–Aksaray–Edirnekapı corridor, which is one of the main routes into the historic peninsula. Traffic diverted from Vatan Caddesi ends up on Millet Caddesi, Fevzipaşa Caddesi and Atatürk Bulvarı, so expect slow going there all morning. In 2022 the ceremony started at 10:00, and the 2026 programme gives no reason to expect the roads to reopen before late morning. If you have an early pickup or an airport run from Fatih, Aksaray or Beyazıt on the 29th, add time and make sure your driver knows the detours.

Is public transport free in Istanbul on 29 October 2026?

Partly. Presidential Decision No. 11919, published in the Official Gazette on 22 October 2026, makes three Istanbul rail lines free for the whole of Thursday 29 October: Marmaray (the cross-Bosphorus commuter line under the strait), the Sirkeci–Kazlıçeşme rail line along the old city's southern shore, and the Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı metro. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu confirmed the same list.

The decree covers only those lines, plus Başkentray in Ankara and İZBAN in İzmir. It does not cover İETT buses, the Metrobüs, ferries, trams or any other metro line. As of 27 October, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) had not announced a free-travel day on its own network. You may see posts saying "all transport is free". Those are based on past years, not on a 2026 announcement. Even in 2025, İBB's free day applied only to personalised Istanbulkart cards, which most visitors don't have. Budget for normal fares on everything else, and check İBB's channels on the morning of the 29th.

The airport metro is free. Should you take it?

If you land at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the 29th with only a carry-on and you're heading to Levent, Şişli or Taksim, the free metro is a sensible choice. Here is why it still isn't the answer for most arrivals:

  • No direct line to the places most visitors stay. Every route to Sultanahmet, Taksim or Galataport needs at least one change, and some of the connecting lines (the M2 metro, the T1 tram) are not free.

  • Luggage. Interchanges mean long corridors, escalators and stairs, which is hard work with large cases, a pushchair or older relatives.

  • Holiday crowds. A free day, a concert at Yenikapı and a wet forecast mean the trains will be busier than usual from the afternoon onwards.

  • Cruise passengers. Galataport in Karaköy is not on any of the free lines.

A simple rule: if you're travelling solo or as a couple with light bags to a hotel near a metro station, take the train. If you're a family or group, have big suitcases, or are going to a hotel in the old city or to a cruise ship, a door-to-door Istanbul Airport transfer is still worth it. Your driver tracks your flight, waits up to 90 minutes after landing at no charge, and avoids the Fatih closures without you having to plan a thing.

What's on at Yenikapı on 29 October?

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's main Republic Day concert starts at 18:00 at the Yenikapı event area. Entry is free. The line-up is Arem & Arman, Mert Demir, Simge and the İBB Folk Dance Ensemble.

Getting there is easy. Yenikapı is a major interchange on Marmaray, which is free that day, as well as on the M1 and M2 metro lines. Local reports advise arriving early by rail rather than by car. It is an open-air site on the Sea of Marmara shore with no cover, so bring a waterproof. The district municipalities are holding their own concerts too: Edis plays the Tuzla shore at 20:30 and Fatma Turgut plays Çekmeköy at 21:00. Both are a long way from the usual visitor areas.

What time are the fireworks, and will the rain spoil them?

As of 27 October, no official time or launch site has been announced for the 2026 Bosphorus fireworks. For reference, the 2013 show began at 19:45 from Ortaköy, and the 2023 centenary show ran from 19:50 to 20:15 at the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge. Plan around a 19:30–21:00 window and check again on the day.

The weather is the bigger unknown. AKOM's weekly forecast has heavy showers on Thursday 29 October, with 20–50 mm of rain and temperatures of 12–16°C. Wednesday the 28th looks cloudy, with light rain. On 27 October, storms had already led to cancellations on some İDO, BUDO and Şehir Hatları ferry sailings. In practice:

  • Standing on the Ortaköy or Üsküdar shoreline for two hours in heavy rain is miserable. A Bosphorus-view restaurant or a boat with an indoor saloon is the better choice this year.

  • Our private Bosphorus yacht has an air-conditioned interior with two cabins. It costs €350 for two hours or €500 for three. All sailings depend on the weather on the day.

  • Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your start time. Check the forecast on Wednesday evening before you commit.

Getting around on 29 October with a private driver

On a day with morning road closures, crowded free trains and evening rain, an hourly driver takes care of all three problems. Our Istanbul private car hire with driver costs €79 for 4 hours, €85 for 5, €99 for 6 and €129 for 8, per vehicle rather than per person, with hotel pickup included. A five- or six-hour booking from late afternoon covers the Yenikapı concert, dinner, a sheltered viewpoint for the fireworks and the drive back to your hotel. Your driver waits out of the rain and collects you from a quieter side street after the show. Drivers speak English or Arabic and keep in touch on WhatsApp. Bridge and motorway tolls are paid separately.

If you're in Istanbul for work over the holiday, our business and executive transport service can plan meetings around the Fatih closure on Thursday morning. Book online at least 6 hours ahead. For anything sooner, message us on WhatsApp. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
