Brief History
In the mid‑1800s, Sultan Abdülmecid I sought a modern residence that reflected contemporary tastes and the empire’s changing identity. The result was Dolmabahçe Palace, which gradually replaced Topkapı as the administrative heart of the empire. The Balyan family—renowned Ottoman Armenian architects—blended European stylistic elements with local craftsmanship, creating a palace that feels both cosmopolitan and unmistakably Istanbul. In the early Republic period, Atatürk used parts of the palace during his stays in the city, adding a poignant layer of significance.

Why Visit Dolmabahçe Palace?
Dolmabahçe is where imperial Ottoman splendour meets 19th‑century European elegance—set on one of the most beautiful waterfronts in the world. From the ornate Imperial Gate (Saltanat Kapısı) to the stately Clock Tower and the luminous waterfront façade, this palace offers architecture, history and atmosphere in every direction.
